PDF merger apps on the App Store often require subscriptions, show ads, or limit how many files you can merge. Some upload your documents to their servers for processing, which is a privacy concern. This browser-based tool works right in Safari — no app download, no subscription, no upload. If you also use Android, check out merge PDF on Android for the same experience on your Android device.
Safari on iPhone is powerful enough to run JavaScript libraries like pdf-lib. When you select PDFs, they load into Safari's memory. The merging happens right on your iPhone — nothing gets sent to a server. The merged PDF then downloads to your Files app or wherever you choose to save it. Want to understand exactly how this works? Read our guide on how browser-based PDF merging works.
When you tap to select files, iOS shows you all available file providers: Files app for local storage, iCloud Drive for cloud files, Google Drive if you have the app installed, Dropbox, OneDrive, or any other file provider. You can merge PDFs from any of these sources.
The drag-to-reorder feature works with touch. Press and hold a file card, then drag it up or down to change the order. It feels natural on iPhone — just like rearranging apps on your home screen.
After merging, Safari downloads the PDF. You'll see a download icon in the top-right corner. Tap it to open the file, or find it in Files → Downloads. You can then move it to iCloud Drive, share it via Messages or Mail, or save it anywhere you want.
Everything works the same on iPad. The larger screen makes it even easier to see your files and drag them around. Safari on iPad has the same capabilities as iPhone.
If you merge PDFs regularly on iPhone, Apple Shortcuts can speed up the workflow. You can create a shortcut that opens mergepdf.dev directly in Safari with one tap. Add it to your home screen or Lock Screen for instant access. While the actual merging still happens in the browser, the shortcut eliminates the step of opening Safari and typing the URL.
After the merged PDF downloads to your Files app, you have full iOS sharing options. Tap the file and hit Share to send it via AirDrop to a nearby Mac or iPad, attach it to an email in Mail, share it in Messages, upload it to iCloud Drive, or open it in any PDF-compatible app. AirDrop is particularly useful for immediately transferring the merged file to your Mac for further editing.
The merged PDF is roughly the combined size of your input files. If you're merging large scanned documents, the output can be substantial. iPhones with 64GB storage may feel the pinch if you're regularly merging large document sets. Consider saving directly to iCloud Drive rather than local storage to avoid filling up your device.
File picker shows no PDFs: Make sure the Files app has access to the locations where your PDFs are stored. Go to Settings → Privacy → Files and Folders to check permissions.
Merge button stays disabled: You need at least 2 files. If you selected files but only one loaded, the other may have been a non-PDF file (like a .pages or .docx document). Only .pdf files are accepted.
Download doesn't appear: Check Safari's download manager by tapping the download icon in the address bar. If it's not there, check Files → Downloads. On older iOS versions, downloads may go to iCloud Drive by default.
Page won't load offline: The page needs to be loaded at least once with internet to cache. If you cleared Safari's cache recently, reload with Wi-Fi first.
